Responsibilities:

Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, an undergraduate college of The New School invites applications for an Assistant Professor, on a full-time Renewable Term Appointment (RTA) for an initial term of four years in the Culture and Media Department. In this program, students consider media (including print, film, radio, television, and the Internet) from the multiple standpoints of history, politics, technology, sociology, textual analysis, and ethnography. The program seeks to prepare students for advanced media studies and for careers in the communications industries and media arts. The start date for this position is July 2018. All hiring is subject to the Provost’s budgetary approval.

We seek candidates whose teaching and research complement the work of other faculty in the department (critical media theory, feminist media, digital culture, media archaeology, race and technology, theories and histories of the image, media avant-gardes, etc.). The successful candidate will design undergraduate courses for and about media and culture in the Anthropocene, drawing on any number of disciplinary areas such as media studies, screen studies, cultural studies, science and technology studies, posthumanities, cultural anthropology, cultural theory, critical race theory, postcolonial theory, ecofeminism and/or the environmental humanities. The successful candidate will also have the capacity to teach at least one of the core introductory lecture courses in the department: Introduction to Media Studies, Introduction to Cultural Studies, and/or Introduction to Screen Studies. The teaching load is five courses per year with the expectation of an advising caseload.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualifications: Candidates must have PhD in hand in cultural studies, media studies or a related field. They must also have some teaching experience, preferably in a liberal arts context. Preference will be given to candidates with background or connection to environmental activism or ecologically-minded media production.
