Responsibilities:

The office of Retention, Data, and Communications for Student Success seeks a Student Success Communications Manager to play an integral role in shaping a communications strategy to strengthen retention, graduation rates, and community-building activities for all New School students. The area of Student Success at The New School supports students throughout their academic journey from orientation through graduation by providing resources, opportunities, and services related to several areas of student life, academic support, and co-curricular activities. The Communications Manager will contribute directly to the mission of Student Success by creating and delivering clear, accurate, and compelling content that reaches students in multiple spaces, and by facilitating collaboration and information sharing across Student Success offices.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the position will oversee daily operations related to improving website content, sending and tracking mass emails, publishing posts on community portals, managing social media accounts, and promoting events and opportunities to students. The successful candidate will be able to leverage existing web, social, print, and mobile channels effectively while being attuned to other approaches that can increase engagement with students. The Communications Manager will be expected to use a variety of assessments and data to inform decision-making around tailored messaging and channel management. The position will oversee 1-2 student workers whose responsibilities include collecting social media content from Student Success offices and designing publications. The position requires regular interaction with colleagues across Student Success and the Marketing & Communications team.
Content Creation and Management
• Solicit content and story ideas from Student Success offices regarding opportunities, time-sensitive information, resources, deadlines, etc.
• Write compelling content for various audiences across multiple channels and formats; creatively package written and visual content for optimal use on each channel
• Coordinate event promotion throughout the year using the university calendar and other tools
• Develop social media voice and presence to support Student Success messaging; establish and manage editorial calendars for social media accounts
• Use analytics from email marketing, apps, and social media to adjust content management strategies
Project Management
• Conduct an inventory of Student Success websites to identify opportunities and eliminate redundancies; oversee necessary changes
• Play a key role in special projects such as producing an academic planner for incoming students
Outreach and Collaboration
• Support the communication needs of Student Success offices pro-actively through regular consulting, collaboration, and sharing of best practices
Partner with Marketing & Communications on new and existing projects involving reorganization of webpages, social media coordination including hashtag campaigns, and promotion of special events highlighting New School students.
Community Management
• Monitor social media and oversee student worker in managing accounts
• Prepare and deliver communication to parents via email and the Parent Portal

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree and minimum 2 years of experience in communications, marketing, digital media, or related role
• Exceptional writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Keen attention to detail
• Team player
• Proven ability to manage projects with reliable follow through
• Ability to write and edit for clarity and brevity, in a wide range of styles for different media and audiences
• Understanding of how visuals and text work together to convey messages
• Comfortable working across a wide range of print and digital media
• Familiarity with best practices for developing digital content and design, including accessibility, usability, and analytics

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in higher education
• Experience with email campaigns, content management systems, social media management systems
• Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, Canvas, or other graphic design tools
