The Institute for Retired Professionals, within the Schools of Public Engagement at The New School seeks a student worker to contribute their creativity, design expertise and strong detail-orientation to facilitate the redesign of the IRP program’s blog, digital news publications, and members-only intranet, all housed at The New School. The redesign is part of this valuable 55-year-old program’s overall strategic plan objectives, to raise the profile of the program and enhance its member services activities, strategic marketing goals, and fundraising plans.
Our ideal candidate plans to pursue a career in the marketing and/or communications field, whether in corporation, marketing agency, or nonprofit organization. Their priority career interests include one or more of the following: public relations, brand management, marketing, journalism, nonprofit external relations and fundraising. Students who envision their career path is headed toward creative agencies that specialize in web design, advertising, and marketing consulting are encouraged to apply.
The applicant must thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment with engaged, technologically proficient and experienced writers, artists and other professionals, led by a program director with career-long experience and expertise in marketing, strategy, brand management, nonprofit fundraising, and education, whose contacts in the marketing industry and nonprofit sector are welcoming to students seeking entry-level positions. The candidate must be familiar with WordPress, willing to learn effective project management, and be capable of juggling multiple and diverse detail-oriented tasks on the web, including migrating existing written content, visual materials and quantitative data from multiple sources, so as to populate new websites and frameworks. Writing duties range from drafting, editing and posting news blogs and feature stories, to assisting the director and IRP writers and graphic specialists in posting and refreshing content on an ongoing basis.


Administrative Duties:

• Collaborate as a valued member of a team of managers, marketers and communicators responsible for the IRP program and its overall brand – inside The New School and to external stakeholders such as popular media, nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, business media, foundation executives, other funders, and civic organizations.
• Facilitate and assist in responding to inquiries on the Institute for Retired Professionals websites and connect senders with relevant contacts in the program.
• Assist the the IRP Director, the SPE Communications Director, and the IRP webmaster in creating, editing, migrating and managing content on the IRP program’s blog and other related publications.
• Complete office tasks as needed in connection with the Student Assistant II post as requested.

Research Projects:

• Complete research projects related to media coverage of the Institute for Retired Professionals including:

• Competitive analysis, i.e. how media exposure of the IRP compares to other adult education/peer learning programs in the NYC metropolitan area, such as Quest and Osher/OLLI;
• Information on major foundations that fund higher education, health, and issues affecting older/retired individuals;
• Identify faculty experts at The New School who can speak to relevant topics and generate feature content for the IRP websites.
Written Content / Media Outreach:

• Review and analysis of major media and writers that focus on older Americans, especially AARP, Vibrant Nation, Jane Brody at The New York Times, and others, as assigned
• Draft blog posts about IRP initiatives, projects, members, students, and intellectual topics such as curriculum, diversity and branding initiatives the IRP is pursuing.
• Draft press releases and media alerts for media outreach initiatives related to university initiatives, projects, and events

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be a full- or part-time student at The New School
• Must be proficient with WordPress.
• Must have strong communication, writing and project management skills with the ability to plan, track and report on projects.
• Preference given to students enrolled in one of the following Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programs at The New School: Media Studies, Media Management, Journalism + Design, Creative Publishing + Critical Journalism, Culture + Media, Literary Studies, and Creative Writing.
• Experience working or interning for a public relations firm, news publication, marketing firm, brand group, publisher, or communications department is preferred
• Interest in nonprofit management, social issues, and intellectual pursuits post-career
• Expertise or working knowledge of digital recording and editing equipment preferred
• Strong writing and communication skills
