Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director of Recreation and Campus Activities is is responsible for Assisting the Director of OSDA to provide management of the campus recreation program including group fitness, personal training, outdoor adventures, intramural sports, and special events, The Assistant Director (AD) is responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of a variety of programs and services designed to support the development and leadership abilities of students, and to bring together The New School community. This position requires flexible hours as well as evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities:
Create goals, learning outcomes, and assessment of recreational programming initiatives.
Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all departmental staff including student office assistants, event staff, fitness instructors, personal trainers and coaches.
Manage the recreation budget, process bi-weekly payroll, and track revenue from event registration.
Manage all sports schedules and events, practices, facility rentals, travel arrangements, officials, and athletic trainers.
Provide on-site supervision at all sporting and special events.
Maintain a working knowledge of governing body rules and regulations.
Collaborate with Residence Hall managers to manage fitness rooms in residence halls
Participate in the planning and execution of large and campus-wide events, and other special programs that support community building including the annual block party.
Provide innovative intramural sports leagues in response to student interest
Create partnerships and contracts with facilities around NYC to host special events, intramural leagues, and sports contests & practices, and secure discounted gym membership rates.
Construct a comprehensive outdoor adventures program and arrange staff, admission, transportation, advertising, and registration
Oversee all aspects of Narwhal mascot management including hiring and training students and scheduling appearances at events and activities
Conduct regular staff meetings with office, fitness, and event staff.
Develop partnerships with external and internal constituencies.
Assist the Director by supporting and collaborating on leadership development opportunities within Student and Campus Life.
Compile, prepare, and maintain records including participation, waivers, injuries, and incident reports.
Monitor group fitness room and make recommendations for improvements to ensure safety and compliance; work closely with facilities department to initiate necessary changes.
Ensure equipment and inventory is accurately and regularly tracked.
Maintain the Narwhalnation.com site (wordpress),payment gateway for events (touchnet); and social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) specific to recreation
Participate in weekly staff meetings and serve on university-wide committees as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required;
Minimum three years full-time professional work experience in collegiate recreation or related experience
Shows initiative, demonstrates high productivity; sets limits for self and others; functions competently under pressure; assumes responsibility in situations requiring action, effectively directs actions of others.
Must be able to work effectively with others in a team environment
Willingness and flexibility to work nights and weekends
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to listen attentively, support ideas and actions of others, ability to give negative feedback constructively, encourages other to take part in problem solving, helps group(s) stay on target, and generates goals and action agendas.
Demonstrated knowledge of theories, principles, and techniques of recreational facilities management, fiscal and personnel management and recreational programming for a diverse campus population.
Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills with the ability to work well with diverse populations (community members, faculty, staff, and students).
Ability to make professional public presentations.
CPR/AED Certification. (Or upon employment)
Computer experience sufficient to utilize e-mail, electronic calendar, word-processing, spreadsheet and database programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or related area is preferred
