The New School seeks a Financial Aid Counselor to join our Student Financial Services team. The is a student centered role focused on providing immediate and comprehensive service to students and parents on funding the student’s education. The candidate will learn to navigate Federal, State and Institutional regulatory requirements, the awarding financial aid, calculating Federal need analysis eligibility, and performing detailed technical duties as it relates to student aid.

Responsibilities ­

- Maintain heavy volume of financial aid telephone calls and respond to email communications

- Counsel students and families on federal, state and institutional aid sources, as well as loan and other financing options, such as private educational loans and the Extended Payment Plan

- Calculate financial need and construct financial aid packages in accordance with federal and institutional guidelines

- Perform Verification of applicant data and use Professional Judgment to adjust federal aid applicants’ eligibility

- Reconcile student aid and loans

- Collect and track financial aid documents

- Certify student loan requests and counsel students on debt management issues

- Present financial aid information at divisional Open Houses, Orientation Sessions, and other events

- Provide consistent and accurate advice about financing options (including the monthly payment plan), billing, refunds, and tuition, fee and housing payments

- Handle special projects as assigned

- Late night and weekends required

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree required
– Experience in counseling, higher education, or customer service experience ­
– Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
– A professional, congenial and polite demeanor
– Ability to work independently and as part of a team
– Experience with personal computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel
– Knowledge of the financial aid process preferred
