Responsibilities:

Communications and Special Projects is seeking a graduate student assistant to support its graphic and communication design needs. The position begins immediately and continues through the end of the 2017-2018 academic year.

The graphic designer reports to the project manager and performs a range of functions, including:
• Designing new promotional materials (posters, flyers, brochures) for events and initiatives throughout the year.
• Updating templates for collateral materials (postcards, table tents, name tags, etc.).
• Updating and formatting internal, text-heavy documents.
• Creating PowerPoint slides for special presentations.

Minimum Qualifications:

General Requirements:
• The candidate must be a New School student who is matriculated into a master’s degree program.
• The candidate must possess a graphic or communication design background.
• The position is paid through the Office of Student Employment (OCSE); a Federal Work Study award is not necessary.
• The candidate must be available to work at least two days per week, approximately 10 hours per week, at a rate of $15 per hour.
• Arrangements to work remotely can be discussed.

Soft Skills:
The graphic designer will have the opportunity to see designs through from conception to final production, expand their portfolio, and work in a dynamic educational environment. The candidate must:
• Translate concepts and messages into innovative designs.
• Engage fully in the creative process, applying feedback and providing revisions and iterations in a timely manner.
• Take initiative, work independently, communicate clearly, and respond to emails reliably.
• Work efficiently in a time-sensitive environment and meet deadlines consistently.
• Possess strong organizational skills, a positive attitude, and professional demeanor.
• Be detail-oriented, punctual, and self-sufficient.
• Demonstrate excellent English written and verbal skills.

Technology Skills:
• Demonstrate advanced Adobe CC skills (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop).
• Ability to adapt designs in various formats for print and web publishing.
• Ability to work with The New School’s new branding elements to create consistent design schemes across media.
• Exceptional knowledge of layout, color, and visual communication, with particular emphasis on informational design that incorporates large amounts of text.

Application Requirements:
Cover letter, résumé, and minimum of two design work samples (event flyers preferred). In your cover letter, include your availability to work during the academic year.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Google Drive.
• Experience with WordPress and content management systems (CMS).
• Experience working in a communications role, especially developing communications strategies, PR, or ad campaigns.
• Experience working with branding elements and style guides.
• Possess a well-developed aesthetic sense and design style.
