Responsibilities:

The Front Desk Advisor is a full-time, administrative position reporting to the Senior International Student Advisor in International Student and Scholar Services. The Advisor is responsible for overseeing the transition of international students and scholars on campus, from their visa applications through their integration into the University community to post-graduate optional practical training.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
• Advise a small caseload of F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars about relevant regulations & their I-94 statuses
• Assist a caseload of F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars with applying for benefits of status (Optional Practical Training, Curricular Practical Training, On-Campus Employment, Severe Economic Hardship, Academic Training, and other benefits
• Provide general F-1 and J-1 advisement and processing for travel, practical training, on-campus employment, reduced course load authorization, leave of absence, immigration check-in and other F-1/J-1 regulatory issues
• Review, advise, and sign I-20/DS-2019 documents for travel and ISSS support letters
• Provide walk-in support and advisement to students and scholars at the front desk
• Provide advisement to students and scholars by email and phone.
• Manage the ISSS advisor email inbox and respond to student inquiries and requests
• Attend regular advisors meetings and supervisory meetings
• Assesses and advise students, scholars, faculty and staff on cultural adjustment, cultural competence and differences in higher educational systems, provide additional training and resources as necessary
• Monitor USCIS and DOS regulations to ensure that the University remains in compliance
• Access software systems like SEVIS, Sunapsis & Banner to: process I-20/DS-2019s; update student info; set up student benefits; and, other actions;
• Contribute to and participate in the planning & implementation of International Student Orientation
• Lead workshops for international students in person, on line, via social media or on video
• Create and develop events and activities under the goal of facilitating smoother on-campus integration of international students
• Liaise with appropriate staff in other divisions;

• Previous professional experience in a related field
• Accurate and detail oriented in working with databases, applications, & advising students
• Ability to collaborate with others, work independently & manage confidential information
• Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills, including sensitivity to cultural differences

• Strong computer skills with proficiency in Windows-based environment including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.), Google Drive, Banner, Sunapsis and/or SEVIS
• Excellent communication, organization, & customer service skills
• A demonstrated student-centered approach and an understanding of student development, higher education, and the International Student and Scholar Services field
• Ability and willingness to work some weekends and evenings
• Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident (this is a federal requirement)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in a related field
• Professional experience in status-related student advising & counseling
• Experience studying or working abroad
